Dr. Skaribas was born in Greece in a small town called Itea. He attended the only public school in town and was accepted in to medical school upon high school graduation. He received his MD from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki in Greece. Moving to Athens he then completed a four year anesthesiology residency program and obtained board certification.
Following in the steps of his Grandfather, Dr. Skaribas came to the US. He immediately completed his ECFMG and started an Internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. After his internship he moved forward completing a full Anesthesia Residency as well as an ACGME accredited Pain Management Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Ioannis Skaribas served as a Fellow under the directorship of Dr. Octavio Calvillo, a nationwide known pain interventionalist and one of the Pioneers of Pain Management in Houston. Remaining at Baylor after graduation Dr. Skaribas was an Assistant Professor in the Anesthesiology Department.
Dr. Ioannis Skaribas is double board certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology, a board member of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). In 2003 he joined Greater Houston Anesthesiology (GHA) the premier anesthesia group in the city of Houston. He serves as the Medical Director and head physician of Greater Houston Pain Consultants (GHPC) within GHA.
Dr. Skaribas is an active member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and for the past 4 years has served on two ASA committees, Patient Safety & Public Education and Anesthesia Assistant Education Committee. He is also an active member of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologist (TSA) where he serves as an alternate delegate, and also as a member of the TSA Educational Committee. Dr. Skaribas is a member of the International and North American Neuromodulation Society, as well as the SJM Neuromodulation Academy. Other active memberships include the American Society of Regional Anesthesia (ASRA), American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP), and the World Institute of Pain (WIP).
Dr. Skaribas has authored and Co-authored textbook chapters as well as Journal manuscripts. His most recent publications were in the journal “Neuromodulation” on the topics of Spinal Cord and Peripheral Occipital Stimulation. He is a distinguished lecturer in the topics of ultrasound guidance in regional anesthesia and chronic pain management, as well as in spinal cord stimulation and neuromodulation. Dr. Skaribas’s special interests are in back pain, discogenic pain and spinal cord stimulation.
He is married to Evelina Delikanaki Skaribas, Med, PhD. He enjoys spending time with his family whenever possible and dreams of his younger days when windsurfing was his passion. He still enjoys snowboarding and swimming.
